our beliefs

  • What we believe

Episcopalians believe in a loving, liberating, and life-giving God. As constituent members of the Anglican Communion in the United States, we are descendants of and partners with the Church of England and the Scottish Episcopal Church, and are part of the third largest group of Christians in the world.

We take seriously our prayerful relationship to Jesus Christ, who continues to console, challenge and guide us in love as individuals and as a community of faith.

We have a legacy of intentional inclusion. Laypeople and clergy cooperate as leaders at all levels of our church. Leadership is a gift from God, and can be expressed by all people in our church, regardless of sexual orientation or gender.

We believe that God loves all of us – no exceptions.

  • The Episcopal Church

ECY is an affirming, inclusive Christian community that is home to people of all faith traditions (or even none). On any given Sunday, about half of those in atendance are "cradle Episcopalians," while the rest of us found a home here after searching a bit for a Christ-centered community with good people, outstanding preaching, and beautiful music.

TEC is a member church of the worldwide Anglican Communion based in the United States with dioceses in the Caribbean, Central and South America, Europe, Jerusalem, and Taiwan.

The presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church is Michael Bruce Curry, the first African-American bishop to serve in that position.

The church, which today includes approximately 3 million members, was organized after the American Revolution, when it became separate from the Church of England. The Episcopal Church describes itself as both Protestant and Catholic, merging practices and theologies of both and developing its own unique character. The Book of Common Prayer, a collection of traditional rites, blessings, liturgies, and prayers used throughout the Anglican Communion, is central our Episcopal worship.

  • Come and See

We believe that the desire to search for God is itself a gift from God. ECY has an open door policy and welcomes all who join us for Sunday worship or for any other event we sponsor. We gather for a traditional service on Sundays at 5pm in Dwight Chapel on Old Campus, which is followed by a simple dinner together. You can also reach out directly to the chaplain, Rev. Ali, who will gladly meet up and looks forward to getting to know you.
